- Use Towers to defend spots like gathering sites, rare resources and narrow passages. Towers are best used in proximity to whatever it is they're ultimately defending. If built too far away (such as in a passage that leads to productions buildings such as Mines), enemy units can simply run past the Tower while taking only passing damage in doing so.
- Several Towers at a separate distance, but within shooting range of each other, can create an effective defensive network to halt enemy advances. It can be cheaper than building a Fort, defends a larger area, as takes longer for the enemy to destroy, since they have to take the Towers one by one, ideally bombarding the enemy the entire way. Use this tactic to reinforce a critical site, such as the area near your Capital, a place full of recruitment buildings, or an important frontier Fort.
- Towers significantly increase the forces required to seize control of a reduced city (equivalent to having a small army in the city's proximity). This can allow a defending player to hold control of a city for an increased period of time even if their army is smaller than the attacking force.
