Patriots are a special type of support unit introduced in Thrones and Patriots, akin to a unique, powered-up version of General. It is automatically created at the nation's Senate after researching the first government, and each nation can only have one Patriot at any time, automatically upgraded when a new government is reasearched, and respawning from the Senate (or the current capital if Senate has been lost) after 30 seconds in case of death.

Patriots, like other Support Units, cannot attack, but enhance armies in several useful ways. They have the same stats and special abilities as a regular General, and are upgraded in the same way, but depending on the government chosen, a Patriot has a couple of additional abilities, and are immune to sniping and bribing akin to civilian units and unlike regular Generals. Once a new type of government is chosen, the current Patriot will change, losing previous benefits and obtaining new ones. However, the nation will retain the benefits of the previous governments.

Compared to Generals, Totalitarian Patriots have +3 ability range while Consensus Patriots have +1 ability range (excluding the range of their armor bonus). This allows Patriots to apply special abilities to a larger army.
