The Napoleon CtW deals primarily with Europe, with forays into Anatolia and the North African coast also being possible as well. Colonies are dealt with as being off-map, and are listed here instead.

France and Alps[]

The heart of the new Republic/Empire, this area must be kept secure at all costs.

Paris[]

The most populous region of all France, the capital of Paris is strategically situated on the Seine valley. It was the 6th century Frankish king, Clovis I, who first established its namesake city, Paris, as his capital and its position as the capital of the future French state was secured as growth increased under the reign of Philip II (1180-1223), and so Paris has remained as such ever since.

It is this city, as well as its surrounding regions, which forms the beating heart of the French war machine. You should make every effort to keep it secure as it is vulnerable to attack by the British across the sea. Enemies from Brittany , Bordeaux , Burgundy , or Belgium would also be a threat.

  • Wonder: Versailles

This is where the Army of the West starts at the beginning of the campaign. You may choose to begin your search for military glory here.

Belgium[]

Belgium's size may be small, but it is no less important an area. Her trade routes, and her ability to function as a buffer between the French territories of Paris and Burgundy and Germany have always made her a coveted prize even in the Middle Ages.

  • Tribute: 20
  • Bonus: Advisor Fouché
  • Supply centre available

Brittany[]

In the wake of religious unrest here, the British have taken control of Brittany and gained a foothold on the Continent. We must drive them out to protect the sovereignty of France!

  • Tribute: 40
  • Bonus: Advisor Talleyrand

This territory begins under British control and is the second battle of the initial Army of the West campaign. One risky strategy that can take place here is to keep repeatedly invading Brittany to obtain the Talleyrand bonus card, either by selling the territory off to someone and then attacking it again, before repeating the process all over again.

Bordeaux[]

Bordeaux dominates the French regions of Gascony and Aquitaine, and is famous for its wines. It borders Spanish Aragon to the south.

This territory begins in French hands.

  • Rare resource: Wine

Marseilles[]

The French region of Provence does not hold anything particularly special, but it is an important starting point for the Republic's fight against her enemies in Italy and the Mediterranean, especially Austria and her allies. Savoy, Piedmont, Napoleon's ancestral homeland of Corsica, and Tunisia can all be attacked from here; Burgundy and Bordeaux can also be accessed should the need arise.

This where the Army of Italy starts at the beginning of the campaign. You may choose to begin your search for military glory here, as the actual Napoleon did historically.

Burgundy[]

The French Royalists have begun an insurrection in this province. It is up to you to put them down.

  • Tribute: 20
  • Bonus: Royalist Oath of Fealty (Ceremony)

This is Napoleon's first battle of the campaign if you choose to have him take control of the Army of the West from Paris. The "Keeping the Peace" scenario begins with you in control of three cities along a small river flowing north-south each of which start out with certain production facilities: Troyes (woodcamp), Dijon (mine), and your capital Lyon (farms). Periodic attacks by Louis de Burbon-Conde (via uprisings among your own civilians) or other royalists (from off the map) will occur: you must not allow any of the cities to be captured for 15 minutes to win. Owing to their initial starting position on the world map, you will get reinforcements from Marseilles.

Once the Royalists are defeated here they will surrender, granting their treasury to you; at the same time the Army of Italy will fail without Napoleon's guidance, so the Directorate will throw their full support behind you and grant a bonus card.

The Royalists are represented by the base game's Persian civilization.

Switzerland[]

This confederation of many small city-states may look like easy pickings, but the Alps that surround them confer them great defensive advantages that will make them difficult to dislodge. However, the passes from here lead west to Burgundy, north to Wurttemberg, east to Bavaria, and south to Savoy and Lombardy, opening up many potential avenues of attack.

  • Bonus: Swiss Oath of Fealty (Nation)

The Swiss are represented by the base game's Iroquois civilization.

Piedmont[]

"We will have limited supplies, but with good leadership we can beat the enemy."

This territory begins under Sardinian control. Choosing to start the campaign here with the Army of Italy from Marseilles will start the Battle of Montenotte scenario. You start with a fortress and some military production facilities, and your resource rate is based on the number of kills by and deaths to your units -- the more enemies you kill, the faster your resource rate, and the reverse when you lose units. You will have 15 minutes to capture the Austrian-held city of Montenotte, nestled within mountains and guarded by a fortress. The Austrians will send periodic waves of armies to attack yours to stop you.

Upon victory, the Directorate will award you an extra 25 tribute, as the Army of the West falters without your guidance and they put their full war effort support behind the Italian campaign.

  • Tribute: 90

Savoy[]

It is not difficult to understand why the Savoyards have abandoned their old capital of Chambéry for Caralis after the War of the Spanish Succession almost a century before. The land is too isolated and mountainous, the climate too foreboding. Nevertheless, Savoy controls Alpine passes north into Burgundy , Switzerland and towards the Languedoc (dominated by the great city of Marseilles ); and southwards into Italy by way of Piedmont and Lombardy - so it should provide rich pickings for any army marching through it!

A Hideaway scenario begins when this territory is attacked.

  • Tribute: 50

Germany and the Low Countries[]

With a good number of armies to be raised (three from Supply centres, and a possible two more from Saxony and Bavaria, it goes without saying that control of Germany is crucial to wining the campaign. Unfortunately, the vast number of German holdings lie under Austrian influence, which poses then an interesting dilemma — do you fight with Austria for each and every territory you can see, or will you try to attempt a decapitation strike on Austria itself?

Bavaria[]

The Wittelsbachs of Bavaria have long been friends of France, but in the wake of the revolution, withdrew some of their support. There are Liberals in Munich, however, who would happily open the gates to the French armies. We should seize the opportunity — Bavaria's position in Germany, and bordering Central Europe, France, and the Mediterranean provinces of Lombardy and Venetia, should not be passed up so easily.

  • Bonus:Bavarian Oath of Fealty (Migration)

This is the capital territory of the Bavarians, who are represented by the base game's Bantu civilization. They begin as Austrian vassals.

Saxony[]

For almost 200 years, the Duchy of Saxony has been a major player in European politics, being the crossroads between Hanover, Brandenburg, Westphalia, Bohemia and Bavaria. If we were to convince them to join our side, it will help greatly in consolidating the Revolution's cause in Germany.

  • Bonus:Saxon Oath of Fealty (Sacrifice)

This is the capital territory of the Saxons, who are represented by the base game's Aztec civilization.

Brandenburg[]

The capital of the Prussian Hohenzollern kingdom ever since they asserted independence from Poland. The Prussians may not be the most cultured kingdom in Europe, but their military prowess has been a challenge to their enemies over the years. Let us settle who is the greatest military power on this continent once and for all. Capture this province, and we can assert power upon Pomerania, Poland, Bohemia and Silesia to the east, or Hanover and Saxony to the west.

  • Bonus: Prussian Oath of Fealty (Industry)

This is the Prussian capital territory.

East Prussia[]

In contrast to the western half of the Prussian kingdom, East Prussia remains an underdeveloped backwater. Nevertheless, it has proven to be a good source of Timber and Furs for the Prussian crown, besides being a buffer between Prussia and her archrivals, Poland and Russia.

  • Bonus: Timber Economic Boom

This territory begins under Prussian control.

West Prussia[]

Bordering Poland to the south and Pomerania to the west, West Prussia has seen an immense amount of investment by the Prussian crown over the past century, and it is now the poster child for enlightened rule in Prussia.

  • Bonus: Military Eureka
  • Tribute: 40
  • Supply centre available

This territory begins under Prussian control.

Wurttemberg[]

The Duchy of Wurttemburg in south-western Germany has long stood in the way of French hegemony in Germany, and has thwarted French ambitions in the region for decades since the end of the War of the Spanish Succession. Any power that holds Wurttemburg will then be able to threaten Belgium, Hesse, Westphalia, Burgundy, Bavaria - and Switzerland. So it is in France's interests to ensure that Wurttemburg remains in French hands once and for all.

  • Rare resource: Papyrus
  • Tribute: 30
  • Bonus: Commandeer Transport

Hanover[]

Hanover has been a British possession on Continental Europe ever since its rulers, the Electors, had one of their number crowned as George I of England in 1714. It is no wonder that they were courted by previous English monarchs, as Hanover is an important economic and military crossroads zone. Hanover will grant you access to most other German lands, as well as the Low Countries to the west, and Norway and Denmark to the north.

  • Tribute: 30
  • Bonus: Merchant Guild
  • Supply centre available

Hesse[]

A fairly prosperous region close to the borders of France's political sphere, Hesse has been in political foment for some time. Conquering this region, located in northeastern Germany, would help us spread the ideals of Revolution further in Europe — be it north and westwards into Holland and Belgium, or deeper into Germany via Hannover, Westphalia and Wurttemberg.

  • Tribute: 50
  • Bonus: Political Dissidents

Westphalia[]

Sitting on the frontiers of Germany with France, Westphalia like so many parts of Germany is neighboured by many territories, most particuarly Hannover, Saxony, Hesse, Wurtemburg and Bavaria. Dominated by the great cathedral-city of Münster, this predominately Catholic region forms one of the bastions of Habsburg rule in the west and should be annexed as soon as possible.

  • Tribute: 60
  • Bonus: Informants
  • Supply centre available

Central Europe and Ruthenia[]

All the lands from the Sudeten Alps to the distant Volga are considered Central-Eastern Europe, and are under the sway of the Russian and Habsburg empires. Both of them nowadays work in concert with one another, usually against Sweden, Prussia and Turkey, but of late have been thinking of ganging up together against you. There is little of interest here other than three things - the first is access to the Ottoman Empire's Balkans territory from the southern reaches of this region, the second is the Duchy of Poland, which would be a very useful vassal, and the third is Russia, who despite their seemingly small size in the campaign can be a thorn in your flesh, and can't be easily invaded. You might find it more expedient to simply steamroller the more easily accessible European powers and then force an alliance between you and the survivors, ending the campaign with a victory.

Russia[]

The capital of the Russian Empire is located here.  From the Imperial Palace at Kronstadt, the Russians administer what could possibly be the largest nation on earth in sheer size. Russia is connected to the Swedish empire to the west by way of the Baltic, and shares borders with four other territories — Poland, East Prussia, Ukraine and Hungary.

  • Bonus: Russian Oath of Fealty
  • Wonder: Kremlin

Poland[]

The Kingdom of Poland is on its last legs, being picked apart from all sides by the Prussians, Austrians, and Russians. It is likely that they will no long be an independent state by the time we are able to do anything about it. Though this may open an opportunity for us to come to their aid and let them breathe free once more...

  • Bonus: Polish Oath of Fealty (Tradition)

This is the capital province of the Polish, represented as the base-game Koreans.

Ukraine[]

The vast riches that lurk under the surface of this land is matched only by its ruggedness — despite almost 2 centuries of direct Russian rule, the Ukraine remains a vast wilderness, and you will be hard pressed to keep your supply lines going here. Victory here, however, will leave the roads to Russia, Wallachia and Hungary open to us.

  • Supply centre available

Austria[]

The capital province of Austria. It will not be a hard fight to take Vienna, but we may have trouble with the outlying regions of the capital.

  • Bonus: Austrian Oath of Fealty (Philosophy)

Hungary[]

The Hungarian nobles are a proud and powerful group within the Austrian Empire. The plains they control are rich in production, and the horseback riding they employ are renowned, and furnish what passes for the cream of the crop in the Imperial Habsburg Army. Hungary is of strategic importance to us, because it opens up a vast number of cross-border links to other areas in Central Europe and the Ottoman lands, most notably Poland, Russia, and Austria.

  • Bonus: Food Economic Boom

This territory begins under Austrian control.

Bohemia[]

Non part of Europe would seem any more strategic than Bohemia. Fought over by the Bohemians and the Austrians for centuries, it finally fell into Habsburg hands at the end of the Middle Ages, and is one of the most heavily developed and populated parts of the Central European region. Bohemia, along with neighbouring Silesia is bordered by several German and Central European provinces, and forms a buffer between several capital regions: Brandenburg, Saxony, Bavaria and Austria.

  • Tribute: 20
  • Bonus: Civic Eureka

This territory begins under Austrian control.

Silesia[]

Silesia has long been a bone of contention, fought over by different powers — the nearby but now-defunct Polish Commonwealth, Habsburg Austria, and finally Hohenzollern Prussia, who now holds this strategic province as a buffer against her larger neighbour, Austria, already control of Silesia's neighbours Bohemia, Hungary and Moravia!

  • Tribute: 20
  • Bonus: Propaganda

This territory begins under Prussian control.

Pomerania[]

Pomerania forms a strategic junction, allowing for overseas access with Sweden across the Baltic, and Hanover, Brandenburg, West Prussia, and Poland. Perhaps that is why this small province has been fought over by so many different kingdoms before finally becoming a Prussian possession in the wake of the War of the Austrian Succession.

  • Rare resource: Obsidian
  • Tribute: 20

Transylvania[]

The vast foothills of Transylvania, cutting off Hungary from Wallachia, are remnants of some of the last tracts of rustic old Europe. Here, the people live a harsh existence through farming, hunting, ranching, and banditry.

  • Tribute: 20

This territory begins under Austrian control.

Moravia[]

Bordered by Bohemia and Silesia to the north and Hungary and Austria to the south, Moravia has long been a part of the Austrian Habsurg Empire since the end of the Middle Ages. Unlike everyone else, liberalism hasn't made much headway here and we must expect that they will not submit to our rule any more easily than the Austrians would.

  • Supply centre available

Mediterranean[]

The Mediterranean theatre of the Napoleon campaign consists of the Italian peninsula as well as the Adriatic. This is an important region, as it is the setting of the Army of Italy path of this CtW. Equally, the Papal States also sits on a big hill of tithes, making it an ideal prize for you as tribute is hard to come by, and the Tuscany region can later be sold off to Austria for even more tribute if you so wish.

Tuscany[]

Though consisting of many Italian city-states, this area is dominated by the Papacy in Rome. The fact that they are the very seat of the church may be an affront to our Republican ideals, but they ought to be treated with caution -- they might not be a great military threat alone, but their power and ability to inspire opposition is not to be underestimated.

  • Bonus: Papal States Oath of Fealty (Caesar)
  • Wonder: Colosseum

Sardinia[]

Though the mainstay of the Kingdom of Sardinia is actually its mainland holdings in Piedmont and Savoy, this is the island in which the kingdom gets its name from and holds its capital. Bringing the kingdom to its knees will not be easy, but control will open up ways to the lower Italian peninsula and Tunisia via the sea.

  • Bonus: Sardinian Oath of Loyalty (Horde)

This territory begins under indirect Austrian control by means of Sardinia's vassal status to Austria.

Corsica[]

The ancestral home of Napoleon himself, the island has always been rather different from France itself as the British supported an independent state here led by Pasquale Paoli at the outbreak of the Revolution. With sea routes to Sardinia, Marseilles, Piedmont, and Tuscany, control of the island would strengthen the holder's position in the western Mediterranean.

  • Bonus: Commander Paoli (On strategic map, liberates a vassal; on tactical map, is a Commando unit with double hit points and fast sniping and sabotage abilities)

This territory begins under British control.

Lombardy[]

Our scouts tell us that the people of this region are already familiar with your accomplishments elsewhere. Hopefully that means there will be little bloodshed here, and a clear path, either into the Alps through Switzerland, or into the rest of Italy, though neighbouring Savoy, Bavaria, Venetia, Piedmont and Tuscany.

  • Tribute: 80
  • Bonus: Advisor Fouché
  • Supply centre available

This territory begins under Austrian control. This is the second battle of the initial Army of Italy campaign that Napoleon pursued historically, the Battle of Lodi. You begin on the southwestern corner of the map with the city of Alessandria, a few workers, and a small army. Opposite you is the Austrians holding their capital of Milan and a second city of Lodi, which are surrounded by rivers on three sides which will require you to cross with transports (on difficulties of Tough and above they will also start with a third city of Lonato on the east side of the map). There is also a Persian Merchant faction with military production buildings on the south side of the map, from whom you can purchase unique units with tribute. You have 90 minutes to capture Milan.

Venetia[]

If we can take this province, it is not much further to the Austrian capital. The key to this province is their stronghold of Mantua. If we can take this, victory is ours, for we can either help to reinforce Bavaria to the north, or the outlying Mediterranean territories of Lombardy, Tuscany and the Illyrian Provinces.

  • Tribute: 100
  • Bonus card: Commerce Eureka

Illyrian Provinces[]

Various different ethnic groups live here, including Slovenes, Croats, and Montenegrins. The Austrians, already in control of neighbours Bavaria and Hungary, use this area as a base of support for their projection of power across the Mediterranean through Venetia and the Balkans — we should consider taking control of it in order to cut them off and contain them.

  • Tribute: 40
  • Bonus card: Commander Schwarzenberg (On strategic map, Austria will not attack France while held; on tactical map, appears as an always-cloaked Commando unit along with four other Commando units and doubles their recharge rate)

This territory begins under Austrian control.

Kingdom of Naples[]

The King of Naples Ferdinand IV opposes our efforts, being a member of the Bourbon dynasty that we have just overthrown and has declared support for the Papacy. Control of this area would not only provide additional avenues of influence upon Tunisia, but also open up the means for pressing into the Balkans should we wish to pursue that avenue.

  • Rare resource: Sulfur
  • Bonus: Spy Academy

This territory begins under the control of the Papal States.

North Sea and Scandinavia[]

At the extreme north of the campaign map is the North Sea and Scandinavia region. There is little here of interest, except for three things - the first is the Continental System card hosted by Norway and Denmark, the second is the existence of Sweden and Holland which could become vassals to feed your armies, while the third is the ever-present threat of the British, safely ensconced out of harm's way by the Atlantic Ocean -- and their many colonies which feed them with tribute.

British Isles[]

The British have established a powerful empire that is spread across the world. Their armies, though small, are well-trained, and they are rightly proud of their Royal Navy, that "wooden wall" that rings their island nation. The British Isles command overseas links to Denmark and Norway; Paris; Brittany and Portugal — and beyond all that, their colonies give them a large economic advantage.

  • Bonus: British Oath of Fealty

Holland[]

The Dutch may be masters of sea trade and hold wealthy colonies overseas, but with land routes from Norway and Denmark, Hanover, Hesse, and Belgium let's see how well they do when faced with an army as big as ours.

  • Bonus: Dutch Oath of Fealty

Norway and Denmark[]

This area is rather far out of the way and may be difficult to exert control over, given how much of an affinity they have with the sea. However, if the plan to starve Britain of the trade routes she depends on is to work, it may be necessary to secure this back door, as from here Sweden, Holland, and Hanover are also accessible.

This territory begins under Dutch control.

  • Rare resource: Fish
  • Bonus: Continental System

Sweden[]

The Kingdom of Sweden may no longer dominate the Baltic Sea like it once did, but it is still a formidable opponent. Perhaps, though, the Swedish sword might be wielded alongside ours?

The Swedes are represented by the base game's Mayan civilization.

  • Bonus: Swedish Oath of Fealty (Architecture)

Iberian Peninsula[]

In contrast to Germany and Africa , the Iberian Peninsula is completely isolated from the rest of Europe, save Britain. Yet the scenarios you face here could well be some of the hardest, but Portugal and Spain control a vast number of colonies that will enrich your own coffers upon the beginning of each turn, affording you more resources to prosecute war in Europe. On the other hand, there is virtually nothing of interest here — almost no tribute, and no supply to speak of, so the strategic value of the Iberian Peninsula at the beginning is rather moot. The only strategic value here would be to divest Portugal and Spain of their colonies and make them yours, along with their tribute revenue which can be used to either form the final alliance to end the game, or to gird your armies for all-out conquest.

Castile[]

For 300 years, the Spanish ruled a vast empire that stretched across the known world. While the Spanish empire may be in decline, their colonies are still numerous. We must also be wary of the Spanish people, for even if we remove their King they will continue to fight until the very end.

  • Bonus: Spanish Oath of Fealty

Portugal[]

Portugal may not be the largest kingdom or the strongest militarily, but its centuries of overseas exploration and trade exploitation around the world have made it rich. Perhaps her fleets might be brought to bear for us against the British?

  • Bonus: Portuguese Oath of Fealty (Gold)

Aragon[]

The Spanish people will be resentful of any occupation. They will keep fighting a guerrilla war long after we have defeated Spain's Royal Army, but such is the price you must pay if you wish to move troops between Castile, Seville and Bordeaux in the least possible time.

  • Bonus: Metal Economic Boom

This territory begins under Spanish control. For Napleon's second campaign he may choose to conquer Spain, starting with a Guerrilla Bases scenario here.

Seville[]

For centuries the wealth of the New World has been brought to Seville via Spanish treasure ships. In addition, it provides another means to attack south across the Strait of Gibraltar to Algiers or west towards Castile or Portugal.

  • Tribute: 40
  • Bonus: Wealth Economic Boom

This territory begins under Spanish control.

Ottoman Empire[]

For almost six centuries, the Turks have been a thorn in the flesh of most of Christendom, and continue to pose a threat to the Russians. Which should suit you fine, for certainly the enemy of your enemy could be a friend.

Turkey[]

The seat of the Ottoman Empire, Turkey comprises not just the Anatolian heartland but the island of Cyprus as well along with the Ionian islands, and connects Asia and Europe through the Balkans and Syria . The presence of the ruins of the old Colossus of Rhodes means that the Ottomans are capable of raising larger armies should you endeavour to wage war against them.

  • Wonder: Colossus

Wallachia[]

A small town in this region is being terrorized by a lord in a castle across the river. If we help them they are sure to join with France.

  • Tribute: 40

Balkans[]

The Balkans consist not just of the mountainous regions that constitute the Slavophonic lands south of the Danube but the southeastern-most tips of Europe often referred to as "Rumelia", namely Bulgarastan, Epirus and Achaea. Returning the lands of the Greeks to civilised Christian rule would provide us a temporary legitimacy boost in the eyes of all the world, as well as open the way to Constantinople ... besides opening Hungary , Wallachia , Illyria , and Naples to attack.

  • Bonus: Cultural dominance

Syria[]

The Holy Land of Christendom is here, and taking control of it would help legitimize our rule across Europe. More practically, we can use this area between the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea as a staging ground to interdict against the powers arrayed against us by interfering with their overseas trade, since a great deal of the wealth of European nations lies in Spice Island and Far Eastern colonies, all which must pass through the Arabian Sea.

  • Bonus: Colony Blockade (prevents an enemy from receiving rare resources or income from colonies for two turns)

Africa[]

For more than a thousand years, littoral Africa has been a part of the vast Muslim empire, now dominated by the Grand Turk back in Constantinople. Perhaps the winds of change are blowing, and it is time to bring enlightenment and revolution to this part of the world as well as Europe.

That said, this region, aside from Egypt, has very little strategic significance, apart from its one true advantage — the Pyramid wonder. However, given how wonders work in CtW Conquest scenarios, it could be said that the advantages of this one Wonder are fairly useless as they do not kick in until you reach level 4 Civics ... at which point, it could be argued that its main advantage, making your cities cheaper, is unnecessary as you should be capturing cities at this point, not building more.

Egypt[]

The capital of Ottoman Africa, Egypt is still by far the most prosperous and largest of all nations in North Africa, thanks to the ageless and peerless Nile River. The Ottoman-appointed rulers of Egypt, the Mamelukes, are oppressing their Egyptian subjects. It is up to you to free them and bring the blessings of the Revolution to Egypt.

  • Tribute: 20
  • Wonder: Pyramids

Tunisia[]

The key to this province is the island of Malta. We will have to do the impossible--beat the Knights of Malta. Seizing this strategic province should then open up our route to other areas —  Algiers and Libya in Africa, Marseilles and Naples back on the European mainland, or Sardinia in the Mediterranean Sea.

  • Tribute: 30
  • Bonus: Logistics

This is the capital of the Knights of Malta faction.

Libya[]

It would seem that Libya is an empty land bereft of any benefits, but it nevertheless forms a crucial waypoint between Egypt to the east, and the island-fortress of Malta, due north of her neighbour Tunisia to the west.

Algiers[]

While seemingly barren and empty, Algiers itself has served as an Ottoman base in the Turks' countless wars in the Mediterranean against Spain, thanks to her links to Seville across the Strait of Gibraltar, and to the rest of littoral Africa via Tunisia. There are rumours that Algiers controls trade routes farther south into Africa, where mineral salt is mined and exported north into Muslim lands and Europe itself, so we should check this place if we have the time.
