Age Overview Units and Buildings History

The Information Age, also known as the Digital Age, is a period in human history which begins in the mid-to-late 20th century CE and lasts to the present day, representing the current time period we are now in. From the 1950s CE, a shift from analogue and mechanical electronics to digital electronics occured, paving way to the rise of digital logic circuits that allows electronic machines to perform tasks such as record keeping and calculation better than before. As the result, the proliferation of systems derived from the digital logic circuitry, such as computers and cellular phones, become widespread through the next few decades.

A major defining event during the early Information Age is the invention of the Internet. Originating from communication networks used by military and academic circles such as the ARPANET, this network was expanded to worldwide coverage over the following years, culminating in the creation of the first web browser, WorldWideWeb, in 1990 CE. The Internet soon become a revolutionary bridge that connects the entire world together, as companies begun to utilize the Internet to improve their commercial efficiency, and people sharing their thoughts through mediums such as electronic mails (e-mails), digital forums and social networks, which gives the era its name due to the massive, ever-growing volume of information distributed digitally around the world.

The largest country in the world, the Soviet Union, had fallen into near-bankruptcy thanks to the stagnant economy and collective rule from the mid-1960s CE. Since 1985 CE, Mikhail Gorbachev tried to save the Soviet Union through a series of reforms termed perestroika and glasnost that would give the Soviet people more freedoms, although this results in a severe political instability which culminates in a failed coup attempt in 1991 CE. Unable to bear the burden of its deterioriating political stability and economy anymore, the Soviet Union was dissolved in December 25, 1991 CE, marking the end of the Cold War and leaving the United States as the sole superpower left in the world.

New technological advancements made older technologies used for years obsolete, such as radar and traditional aircraft bombers. Stealth technologies, and space flight are more prevalent in this age, and continue to grow. Human thought and technology are more automated, but still rely on human interaction.

In regards to conflict, the nature has of warfare in the Information Age has changed significantly; modern warfare is more often taking place in urban environment and typically involves the grueling and difficult efforts of conventional forces in fighting the seemingly endless insurgency and terrorism. The earliest of such conflicts is the Soviet war in Afghanistan where an amalgamation of insurgent groups known as the Mujahideen fight against the Soviet military until the latter's withdrawal in 1989 CE. Over a decade later, in 2001 CE, the 9/11 attacks, said to be the deadliest terrorist attack in the American soil, led to the War on Terror which includes the invasion of Afghanistan that successfully toppled the Taliban government linked with the terrorists. Years later, the United States invades Iraq in 2003 CE, which has lasting reprecussions such as the rise of numerous insurgent groups which led to the Middle East region's everlasting instability, including the notorious Islamic State of Iraq and Syria/Levant. The most recent conflict is the Arab Spring in 2010 CE, a series of revolutions and uprisings in the Arab world which results in the change of governments of various countries except Libya, Syria, and Yemen, that remains embroiled in a civil war to the present day.
