In the Extended Edition, this unit/building is affected by a damage bug.

The Fortress is the third Fort-type building, upgraded from Castle at the Enlightenment Age once Military 4 (Conscription) is researched. It is automatically upgraded to Redoubt at the Modern Age once Military 6 (Nation-in-Arms) is researched.

When upgraded from the Castle, the Fortress gains +900 hit points, +1 armor, +1 range, +2 line of sight and +20 Metal plunder value.

Trivia[]

  • The Fortress, unlike the majority of buildings, does not benefit from the Hit points bonus granted by Large and Major Cities.
  • After reaching the Modern Age, the Fortress would automatically use the Redoubt model, even if the required Military technology was not researched yet. However, such a change would only be visual, as the name and the stats of the building would remain unchanged (except for Romans, whose Fort-type structures would actually upgrade without meeting their standard Military research prerequisites, which is granted by the undocumented feature of the Power of Caesar).
