In the Extended Edition, this unit/building is affected by a damage bug.

The Castle is the second Fort-type building, upgraded from Fort at the Medieval Age. It is automatically upgraded to Fortress at the Enlightenment Age once Military 4 (Conscription) is researched.

When upgraded from the Fort, the Castle gains +800 hit points, +1 armor, +2 line of sight and +20 Metal plunder value.

Trivia[]

  • The Castle, unlike the majority of buildings, does not benefit from the Hit points bonus granted by Large and Major Cities.
  • Since building models don't change in the Medieval Age, and the Castle upgrades in the Enlightenment Age, the castle models only appear in the Gunpowder Age, being one of the only building models to be used for only a single age.
  • After reaching the Enlightenment / Modern Ages, the Castle would automatically use the Fortress / Redoubt models, even if the required Military technology was not researched yet. However, such a change would only be visual, as the name and the stats of the building would remain unchanged (except for Romans, whose Fort-type structures would actually upgrade without meeting their standard Military research prerequisites, which is granted by the undocumented feature of the Power of Caesar).
